Week 10/20 ā Ahmedabad Marathon Training

Every September, the world discovers that the phone in its pocket has suddenly become prehistoric.
A new iPhone arrives. Better camera. Better processor. Better battery. Better something-that-I-didnāt-know-was-bad-until-Apple-told-me.
And somewhere in Pune, I was conducting my own product launch.
i Pron-ate-IN Bro.
No titanium. No 48-megapixel camera. Just one 51-year-old chassis, one recently troublesome knee, and a desperate attempt to upgrade the operating system without damaging the hardware.
Week 10 was supposed to be about bringing some quality back into training. Instead, it became another week of negotiation with the body.
The easy running continued. Tuesday and Wednesday gave me decent aerobic runs. On Thursday I had planned 2 Ć 6 minutes at threshold. The legs, however, had other ideas. Strength training from Tuesday evening plus Wednesdayās run had left them sore.
Old me might have said: Workout likha hai toh workout hoga.
Slightly wiser me did an easy recovery run and 10 Ć 100 m strides instead.
Maybe thatās the real upgrade.
Saturday: i Pron-ate-IN Bro
Saturday was the weekās big test.
The plan was 14 km easy/high Zone 2 followed by 4 km around 5:10/km.
For the first few kilometres I behaved myself. Then around 7 km I met some fellow runners.
There are few things more dangerous to an easy run than other runners.
Conversation started. Pace increased. Heart rate followed. Suddenly my carefully designed Zone 2 run had discovered 5:20/km.
Eventually sanity returned and I slowed down.
After 14 km, I stopped briefly and then ran the final four in 5:13, 5:30, 5:25 and 5:34.
Not the planned 5:10/km.
But it was 23°C, horribly humid, and this time I wasnāt interested in winning a workout. I kept the effort around upper Zone 2/Zone 3 and finished with the knee behaving itself.
18.2 km. 1:44:34. 5:45/km. HR 146. Cadence 170.
A few weeks ago I was worrying about whether the knee would allow me to run.
Now it had handled almost 105 minutes.
Thatās an upgrade worth paying for.
Sunday was a short 4 km trail run/walk. Nothing heroic. Hills, uneven ground, some walking and another little test for the knee after Saturdayās 18 km.
It passed.
And Delhi is off
There was another decision this week.
Iāve withdrawn from the Delhi Half Marathon on 18 October.
I could probably get myself to the start line. But getting to a start line and being trained to race your goal are two different things.
Trying to compress five or six weeks of training into three is exactly how one small injury applies for permanent residency.
So no Delhi.
That stings a little. But perhaps this entire injury cycle has been teaching me the same thing repeatedly:
The goal isnāt to rescue the training plan. The goal is to become fit enough to race well again.
The reset is now simpler.
Iāll look at a half marathon in November ā Ahmedabad or Baramati. That gives me time to rebuild threshold work, extend the long runs and, most importantly, let the knee catch up with the ambitions inside my head.
Ahmedabad Marathon remains the larger journey. The November half can become the checkpoint rather than the deadline.
Ten weeks into a 20-week plan, Iām almost exactly where every endurance runner hates being:
not where I planned to be.
But Iām running again.
The chassis has come back from the workshop. The software update is downloading.
And unlike the iPhone 18 Pro, this upgrade doesnāt need to arrive every September.

Same old hardware. Slightly smarter user.
