Sometimes the smartest training session is the one you don’t try to win.
Last week I finally accepted that my knee does not care about my race calendar.
I withdrew from the Delhi Half Marathon. Trying to rebuild enough fitness to chase my original goal in October would mean compressing training exactly when the knee was asking for patience.
So the HM moves to November — Ahmedabad or Baramati.
Delhi is gone. The goal isn’t.

Threshold knocks again
Tuesday was the first proper test: 3 × 4 minutes at 4:46, 4:35 and 4:40/km.
Just 12 minutes of threshold work. Earlier I might have called that a warm-up. After the last few weeks, it felt like progress.
The objective wasn’t fitness. It was asking the knee:
Can you handle this again?
The answer seemed to be: Haan. But don’t get excited.
Wednesday was deliberately boring — 12 km easy on rolling terrain, keeping the effort controlled and walking where required.
Sometimes boring is beautiful.
Saturday: A little more like the old days
This was the week’s real confidence builder:
18.8 km | 5:37/km average
The run progressed nicely:
10.6 km @ 5:52 → 4 km @ 5:18 → 4 km @ 5:00
Unlike the previous Saturday, I didn’t get carried away early. HR stayed controlled, and I reached roughly my 3:30 marathon pace only in the final 4 km.
That doesn’t mean I’m ready to run another 38 km at 5:00/km!
But after the knee interruption, finishing a long run there — in Pune’s 23°C and 84% humidity — was encouraging.
Sunday completed the experiment: 9 km recovery at 7:45/km, HR 117.
No heroics. No Strava audition.
The chassis is coming back
The engine was never really the problem.
This week the knee handled threshold, aerobic running, an 18.8 km progressive long run and recovery the next morning.
That doesn’t mean:
KNEE FIXED. RESUME PROGRAMME.
It means:
Load accepted. Proceed to next counter.
Very Sarkari-office style. One stamp received. Please report again next week.
With Delhi removed, I don’t need to force the comeback. I can rebuild toward a November Half Marathon, while keeping the bigger destination in sight:
Google Maps would probably say:
“Route recalculated. You are still heading toward your destination.”
For now:
Engine ON. Chassis behaving. Ego — hopefully — still in Zone 2. 🏃♂️😄
